On Monday, June 26, 2017 at 9:08 pm, Officer Danny Mendoza noticed a pickup truck with its hazard lights on the side of the road near Exit 19 on I-575 Southbound. Officer Mendoza pulled over to see if he could assist the driver and found the passenger door open with a male unconscious on the ground and a female unresponsive sitting in the passenger seat. Officer Mendoza recognized both individuals exhibited signs they were suffering from a drug overdose and began CPR on the female while an unknown "Good Samaritan" checked for a pulse and cleared the airway of the unconscious male.
Corporal Tiffany Cromer arrived on scene along with two (2) Cherokee Sheriff's Deputies, Lt. David Barone and Deputy Joe Testa. Officers and Deputies began CPR and administered NARCAN to the unresponsive male and female.
Because of the efforts of Officer Mendoza, Cpl. Cromer, Lt. Baron, and Deputy Testa with the aid of NARCAN and CPR, both individuals were revived and transported to Northside Cherokee Hospital where they survived and were treated. This incident has been forwarded to the Police Department's Awards Board in an effort for these Law Enforcement Officers and Good Samaritan to be recognized for a “Life Saving Award” at an upcoming City Council Meeting.
Chief Mark J. Mitchell states, "We are extremely proud of our Officers, Cherokee Sheriff's Deputies and Citizen who quickly worked together as a team to save the lives of these individuals." We are all in this together when it comes to serving our community."
Canton Police are asking for the Community’s help in identifying the Good Samaritan who participated in these lifesaving efforts. If you can help us locate the pictured individual please contact the Canton Police Department at 770-720-4883.
